{"id":18192,"date":"2024-01-28T07:00:24","date_gmt":"2024-01-27T20:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=18192"},"modified":"2024-01-31T17:43:33","modified_gmt":"2024-01-31T06:43:33","slug":"recent-rainfall-may-have-put-your-hay-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/recent-rainfall-may-have-put-your-hay-at-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Recent rainfall may have put your hay at risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Agriculture Victoria<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Farmers need to be mindful that even well-made hay can still be prone to spontaneous combustion.<\/p>\n<p>Agriculture Victoria Program Manager for Dairy &#8211; North, Brett Davidson, said spontaneous combustion is usually caused by excess moisture at baling.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Fires can also start due to heavy rainfall events which has soaked into stacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Intense rainfall could compromise even well covered stacks, as water can pool at the base of a stack, seep into gaps or could be blown under covers,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Davidson said for those with moisture meters, ideally hay moisture levels should be in the ranges below:<\/p>\n<p>Small square bales: 16 &#8211; 18 per cent<br \/>\nLarge round bales: 14 &#8211; 16 per cent<br \/>\nLarge square bales: 12 &#8211; 14 per cent<br \/>\nExport hay: 4%), could lead to more mould and heating, possibly resulting in spontaneous combustion.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Mr Davidson said it\u2019s vitally important to regularly monitor the stack from 1 week after rainfall for signs of heating.<\/p>\n<p>He said the signs of heating are:<br \/>\n\u2022 dampness on the tops of bales<br \/>\n\u2022 steam rising from the stack<br \/>\n\u2022 moisture build-up on roofing iron or under tarps of outside stacks<br \/>\n\u2022 unusual odours (e.g. pipe tobacco, caramel, burning, musty)<br \/>\n\u2022 sometimes the stack may slump in places<br \/>\n\u2022 corrosion on underside of tin roof.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Davidson said unfortunately, much of the heating will occur in the stack centre which is difficult to pick up.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018To try and get an idea on how hot a stack has become, use a crowbar pushed into the stack as far as possible and after a couple of hours, remove the crowbar and feel how hot it is.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>A rough guideline to check a haystacks temperature using a crowbar, is as follows:<br \/>\n\u2022 70 degrees the bar is too hot to hold.
