{"id":18368,"date":"2017-10-04T07:34:55","date_gmt":"2017-10-04T07:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=1310"},"modified":"2024-02-02T16:54:19","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T05:54:19","slug":"exhibition-asks-what-if","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/exhibition-asks-what-if\/","title":{"rendered":"Exhibition asks &#8216;What If?&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Jane Gardner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gordon artist and proud Wadawurrung woman, Aunty Marlene Gilson, says she\u2019s always had a love of history, houses and nature.<br \/>\nSo it\u2019s no surprise her latest exhibition, currently on show at the Koorie Heritage Trust in Federation Square in Melbourne, combines all three.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene\u2019s exhibition, entitled \u201cWhat If?\u201d includes paintings that explore colonisation and the idea of Aboriginal people landing on the shores of England.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene\u2019s paintings depict colourful detailed images of many historical moments. From William Buckley (an escaped convict who was adopted by the Aboriginals) to the Ballarat Goldfields or the Melbourne Cup race day picnics at Lal Lal Falls, there\u2019s no end to the information and stories contained in Marlene\u2019s paintings. <\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s even one of the humble beginnings of Australian Rules Football, where Aboriginal men kick a possum skin ball.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene shares her current exhibition with her equally talented daughter Deanne Gilson, who calls her exhibition \u2018Murnong: Yam Daisies\u2019, which also explores colonisation and the effect it had and continues to have on Aboriginal women.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene and Deanne\u2019s interest in history is expressed through their images, using paint and ceramics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPost 1850, Aboriginal people disappeared from the colonial landscape,\u201d Marlene said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeanne and I have created works that share our experiences of colonisation and how our family has been effected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;What If?&#8217; and &#8216;Murnong-Yam Daisies&#8217;, is on at Federation square until Sunday October 8.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jane Gardner Gordon artist and proud Wadawurrung woman, Aunty Marlene Gilson, says she\u2019s always had a love of history, houses and nature.
