{"id":18392,"date":"2017-12-19T04:42:07","date_gmt":"2017-12-19T04:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=1564"},"modified":"2024-02-02T17:09:38","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T06:09:38","slug":"fury-over-illegally-lit-fires","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/crime\/fury-over-illegally-lit-fires\/","title":{"rendered":"Fury over illegally lit fires"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Jessica Howard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Members of the Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade\u2019s Group are fuming over the number of illegally lit fires during the fire danger period.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Group Officer, Nathan Ractliffe said the group had attended more than a dozen fires since the FDP commenced on November 27.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are really disappointed,\u201d he said.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t the first year that we\u2019ve had a zero tolerance approach to bushfire arson, and<br \/>\nit\u2019s not the first fire season, yet people are still recklessly lighting fires and not even<br \/>\nconsidering the ramifications of it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ractliffe said the fires had occurred in Bacchus Marsh and the Rowsley Valley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are obviously still cleaning up their backyards before Christmas and instead of going to the tip and disposing of their rubbish properly, they are setting it on fire, which is not only dangerous, but illegal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot have an open fire in an urban environment without a permit, it\u2019s that<br \/>\nsimple\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Residents are required to apply for a permit through Moorabool Shire Council.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re stuck and need to do a burn off, or you\u2019re having a combustion fire barbecue, you need to seek permission first,\u201d Mr Ractliffe said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround half of those responsible for the illegally lit fires in the three weeks since the FDP commenced have been spoken to by police and will be charged in the near future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone found guilty of recklessly or intentionally causing a bushfire can face penalties of<br \/>\nup to 15-years imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>Lighting a fire on a total fire ban day can also attract a fine of around $37,000 or up to two<br \/>\nyears in jail.<\/p>\n<p>State Emergencies and Security Command Assistant Commissioner, Debra Abbott said Victoria Police have ramped up efforts to prevent recklessly lit fires.<\/p>\n<p>She said police are targeting high risk locations and persons of interest in an effort to catch arsonists before their behaviour has devastating consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBushfire arson can result in a huge cost to the community through loss of life, destruction of property and the decimation of the environment,\u201d Ms Abbott said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you see something you think looks suspicious, please say something\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>To find out what you can and can\u2019t day during the fire danger period, and on days of total<br \/>\nfire ban, visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au\/warnings-restrictions\/can.<\/p>\n<p>To report suspicious behaviour contact Triple Zero. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jessica Howard Members of the Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade\u2019s Group are fuming over the number of illegally lit fires during the fire danger period.
