{"id":18422,"date":"2018-05-01T00:51:30","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T00:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=1950"},"modified":"2024-02-02T17:47:24","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T06:47:24","slug":"small-term-pain-for-long-term-gain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/small-term-pain-for-long-term-gain\/","title":{"rendered":"Small term pain for long term gain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>By Helen Tatchell<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over $900,000 is being spent by council on a new look streetscape in Ballan, and despite some traders venting their annoyance, works are progressing well.<br \/>\nThe streetscape works follow a significant community consultation process that informed and helped design the project.<br \/>\nCouncil\u2019s General Manager Infrastructure Phil Jeffrey said Council staff and contactors are in constant contact with traders to minimise any impact of the project<br \/>\n\u201cPaving works have significantly progressed, and works are proceeding according to schedule.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is anticipated that asphalt will be laid next week to areas currently under construction and barriers removed for completed sections marking a significant milestone for the project,\u201d Mr Jeffrey said.<br \/>\nAt a recent Ballan &amp; District Chamber of Commerce meeting Vice-Chairman Dave Nickels asked for a \u2018strong worded\u2019 letter to be sent, as a collective, to the shire voicing trader concerns.<br \/>\n\u201cWe were told two weeks and it\u2019s been nine. Consultation has been zip with council. Nine weeks is unacceptable when told two,\u201d Mr Nickels said.<br \/>\nCaf\u00e9 owner Lisa Kennedy and butcher Shane Zammit also joined in the chorus.<br \/>\n\u201cOur sales revenue is mainly walk ins. When the barriers are up we lose 50 per cent of income. We can\u2019t survive nine to ten weeks and the last thing we want to do is go broke,\u201d Ms Kennedy told the meeting.<br \/>\nMr Zammit said the time frame was longer than thought.<br \/>\nMr Jeffrey responded to the claims saying as part of the works, Council is also installing underground conduits that will future proof the street for the potential undergrounding of electricity.<br \/>\n\u201cInstallation works of this nature may slow the progress of the works but will definitely provide a better long-term outcome.<br \/>\n\u201cPedestrian access and access to businesses in Inglis Street have been retained, and we once again, ask the community to be patient while works are being undertaken.\u201d<br \/>\nTo minimise impacts Mr Jeffrey said the contractors will also undertake night works in some areas.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are making every effort to expedite these works, which will enhance the visual appeal and functionality of the street and deliver a great outcome for the Ballan community,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cCouncil and the contractors are hearing many positive comments from the community and traders in relation to works so far.\u201d<br \/>\nCouncil will provide further progress reports over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Helen Tatchell Over $900,000 is being spent by council on a new look streetscape in Ballan, and despite some traders venting their annoyance, works are progressing well.
