It may seem that every film out these days either revolves around a superhero or is a cheap comedy, but a group of Ballan residents have decided to celebrate cinema with a new society.
\nThe Ballan Film Society, in association with the Ballan Community House, screens films monthly at the Ballan Mechanics Hall.
\nFilm Society President Rodney Browne said the idea for the society came about \u201ctwo or three years ago,\u201d as local members in the community wanted to find a way to share their love of film.
\n \u201cA group of like-minded people wanted something a bit more interesting, and not so mainstream,\u201d he said.
\nMr Browning said it\u2019s also an \u201copportunity to utilize the Ballan Mechanics\u2019 Hall\u201d for film screenings, following the society\u2019s $3,000 grant from Moorabool Shire Council for a projector and screen.
\nLast month\u2019s screening of dark comedy The Lobster garnered over 24 viewers, with Mr Browne hoping for around \u201c20 people as regulars, but even more.\u201d
\nAlthough the society has screened recent films, Mr Browne hopes to \u201ctry and reintroduce films.\u201d
\n\u201cEveryone\u2019s always focusing on what\u2019s next but would also like to shed light on films that haven\u2019t been seen,\u201d he said, mentioning he would like to focus on films from various eras and genres.
\nThe society\u2019s next film screening will be the 2018 Best Picture nominee Lady Bird on Sunday, 10 March from 3pm.
\nTickets will be available at the door (cash only), with annual membership costing $75, or $30 for a three-film pass over 12-months.
