{"id":18554,"date":"2019-09-09T12:14:17","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T02:14:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=3426"},"modified":"2024-02-02T20:50:47","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T09:50:47","slug":"gauging-the-rainfall-for-the-last-100-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/gauging-the-rainfall-for-the-last-100-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Gauging the rainfall for the last 100-years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Meg Kennedy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A family that has recorded rainfall for more than a century has been officially acknowledged by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).<\/p>\n<p>John Molesworth was thanked on behalf of the Molesworth family at a ceremony on Friday, 30 August, for their dedication to measuring rainfall at the historic Ballark homestead.<\/p>\n<p>The Molesworths have recorded rainfall since 1889, with records contributing to Australia\u2019s national climate database.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of BOM visited the picturesque property in Morrisons to present the Molesworth family with a memento barometer plaque, an official document from BOM, and a record of every year of rainfall recorded by the Molesworth family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEfforts like these \u2013 and particularly the long-term, reliable efforts \u2013 it may only be a little bit of time every day, it really adds up,\u201d said BOM State Manager Dr Andrew Tupper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong term climate records are gold for our climatologists, our examination of climate change and of natural variability, and our understanding of place,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bureau may be the custodian of the climate record, but volunteers like the Molesworths have helped make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Molesworth said he checks the rain gauge \u2013 a round, bronze object located a few metres away from his house \u2013 every day at 7am.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese days, people look at their phones, and they\u2019re all expects on the weather; [for] farmers, weather is a really important management of farming,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Although he\u2019s been observing the weather for decades, Mr Molesworth has doubts about the current discourse around global warming and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are saying we\u2019re heading for disaster\u2026the climate is forever changing, but I believe it\u2019s all happened before, what we\u2019re going through now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father before me, he took a lot of notice of the weather; he also said if we knew more about nature, we\u2019d know a lot more about the weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The current Molesworth family have been on site at \u2018Ballark\u2019 since 1954 when John\u2019s father Bob took over the property from his grandfather John Matheson Molesworth.<\/p>\n<p>John resides at Ballark with his wife Liz, daughter Kate with son James, Claire and sons Sam and Will.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Meg Kennedy A family that has recorded rainfall for more than a century has been officially acknowledged by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).
