What does a hairdresser and a volunteer fire brigade member have in common? Nothing, except the shared empathy for the community.
\nAbbey Kick was the 2017 Business Excellence Awards Young Achiever of the Year and owns Amber Hair Studio in Bacchus Marsh, and is offering one free hair cut to local volunteer fire fighters, who have been engaged in the bushfires that ravaged Victoria and New South Wales.
\nAs the salon\u2019s owner, Ms Kick came up with the idea of free haircuts for the month of February.
\n\u201cIf the fires continue, we may do [free haircuts] for longer.
\n\u201cI just wanted to do something,\u201d she said.
\n\u201cWe did a raffle and raised over $500 dollars, but we wanted to do more.
\n\u201cThere are so many local firefighters out there that still pay a fire levy, so we need to do something a bit extra.\u201d
\nThe recent bushfires were close to home for Kick, telling the Moorabool News her uncle\u2019s property was at risk of the blaze.
\n\u201cOne of my clients had to change his appointment to fight the fires,\u201d Kick said.
\n\u201cHe actually went to fight the fire near my uncle\u2019s resort in Walwa (north\/west of Corryong), so I gave [client] a free haircut and thought it might be a good idea and just help as a small thank you.\u201d
