AFTER months of preparation, a popular Moorabool carnival returned for its 122nd iteration over the weekend, filling the streets with music and fun.<\/p>\n
The Blackwood Woodchop & Easter Carnival is an institution in Blackwood, with fun activities such as gumboot throwing and tug-o-war, the woodchop, and fantastic live music.<\/p>\n
While the dust hasn’t yet settled, president of the non-profit organisers Blackwood Progress Association, Brendan Hehir, estimates over 4500 people took part in the Carnival.<\/p>\n
“The weather was kinder to us this year than last year, we got lucky. It was a beautiful, consistently warm day\u2026 we started off with the kids’ races and gumboot throwing, which morphed into egg throwing and the big tug-o-war,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Because it was such a fine day, everyone hung around for the activities, and it built up to really big numbers.<\/p>\n
“For some reason, families just love the Carnival. It reminds the parents of the old days, and what it was like growing up for the parents, I think.<\/p>\n
“Surprisingly, something like chucking a gumboot attracts really long queues.”<\/p>\n
The fantastic music program on the day included a range of blues, country, and Celtic music, headlined by Austral and C.W. Stoneking.<\/p>\n
Mr Hehir said that, as always, the event wouldn’t be possible without the efforts of the many hard-working volunteers.<\/p>\n
He also thanked the Midland Axemen’s Association, for whom this weekend was their 72nd taking part in the Carnival.<\/p>\n
“This year, I’d love to especially thank the Midland Axemen’s Association. They love it in Blackwood as much as we love having them there,” Mr Hehir said.<\/p>\n
“I’d also like to thank the Moorabool News for their interest and support, and help promoting the Carnival. It’s a great opportunity to promote our town, and keep Blackwood on the map.”<\/p>\n
