The safety of pedestrians on a busy Bacchus Marsh street is set to improve in the New Year\u00a0\u2013 but without the knowledge of one local councillor, it appears.<\/p>\n

A local bus driver contacted the Moorabool News about the issue\u00a0of the lack of a pedestrian crossing and bus shelters\u00a0on\u00a0Bennett St, Bacchus Marsh,\u00a0saying\u00a0it presents a danger to pedestrians.<\/p>\n

Public Transport Victoria\u00a0spokesperson Nicholas White told the Moorabool News that two stops would be moved and upgraded\u00a0on Bennett St\u00a0in the New Year\u00a0to improve safety for passengers and pedestrians.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new bus stops will be fully accessible and shelters will protect passengers from any inclement weather,\u201d Mr White explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cConstruction is due to start in the first quarter of this year and be complete shortly after.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s the pedestrian crossing that is most important, according to the concerned bus driver.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the senior citizens centre across the road from the shopping centre, those people are struggling to get across what is a major road. They don\u2019t move very quickly, and they stress a\u00a0bit I think, and they don\u2019t need it at that age. And there\u2019s a kindergarten across the road too, it\u2019s ridiculous that we\u2019ve been waiting this long for a\u00a0crossing,\u201d\u00a0he said.
\n\u201cWe\u2019ve\u00a0been asking for a\u00a0crossing to be put there, and\u00a0Tonia\u00a0Dudzik said on\u00a0facebook\u00a0that she hasn\u2019t had\u00a0any people calling council saying we need a crossing there,\u00a0and I\u00a0find\u00a0that hard to\u00a0believe.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Moorabool News asked Cr Dudzik if she thought a crossing on Bennett St is required.<\/p>\n

\u201cA pedestrian crossing at Bennett Street near the bus stop and Village Shopping Centre would make it safer for children and the elderly to cross the road. I will make further enquiries and raise the need for a pedestrian crossing,\u201d Cr Dudzik said.<\/p>\n

However, when the Moorabool News asked council whether the construction of a pedestrian crossing would be its responsibility or that of VicRoads\u2026 it turns out, the project is already well on the radar.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is currently a pedestrian refuge next to the Bennett Street bus stops. Council is undertaking design work to convert this to a designated pedestrian crossing, factoring in the proposed bus stop upgrades that are scheduled to occur early this year by PTV,\u201d read a council statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing completion of the design, the project will be referred to the capital program for funding.\u201d<\/p>\n
