{"id":292,"date":"2017-01-31T03:54:18","date_gmt":"2017-01-31T03:54:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=292"},"modified":"2024-02-02T03:03:51","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T16:03:51","slug":"number-one-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/number-one-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Number one event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>By Kate Taylor<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It makes for a strange story, but the Literacy Trail has won\u00a0Moorabool\u00a0Shire Council\u2019s Australia Day Award for Community Event of the Year \u2013 despite council announcing after last year\u2019s trail that it would be the event\u2019s\u00a0final one.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the council-run event receiving council-awarded recognition, it was not a council decision to end the award-winning\u00a0event.<\/p>\n<p>Funding for the event has been cut \u2013 it was funded under the Best Start Program with state government money, but a review saw the government decide that the funds should instead be spent on services for families and children experiencing significant challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of staging the literacy trail annually is more than $70,000 \u2013 but the event is extraordinarily popular, with more than 1500 kids attending last year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe event brings together local businesses, emergency services, community groups, health and welfare organisations, schools, kindergartens, playgroups and the general public, all with the shared goal of educating our young children about the importance of reading, writing and numeracy,\u201d read the nomination for the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(it) \u2026relies heavily on the good will of many in our community to ensure the whole town is engaged in the event.
