Ever wondered what it\u2019s like to work in prison?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Most people have a very particular idea \u2013 high walls, long and dark corridors and heavy security. The reality is that working in a prison is so much more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

United by a desire to protect the public and change lives for the better, Victoria\u2019s prison officers are as diverse as the communities they serve.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

From tradies and teachers to healthcare workers and retail staff \u2013 it\u2019s a career that attracts people from all walks of life, but few know what the role of a prison officer actually entails.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYou meet so many people from different walks of life working in a prison and it\u2019s my responsibility to make sure they are supervised and supported at all times,\u201d says Corey, who has worked at Barwon Prison for more than 12 years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

After years working in hospitality, Corey followed his mother\u2019s footsteps and became a prison officer. Despite not having any formal skills or qualifications, it didn\u2019t take long for Corey to climb the ranks, and he is now a Prison Supervisor managing a team of 11 people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe progression opportunities are endless. I joined Corrections Victoria as an unskilled worker but it\u2019s easy to make something of yourself here if you want to,\u201d said Corey. \u201cI\u2019m proof that you can achieve anything if you work hard. I went from having no formal skills, to earning two promotions and am now respected by colleagues and people in custody.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI never thought I\u2019d work in the same prison as my mum, but following in her footsteps has given me a career to be proud of.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cCommunication is everything,\u201d says Eric, a Prison Officer at Metropolitan Remand Centre.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cBefore becoming a prison officer, I thought it would be a physically challenging job. Now I know one of the most important tools we have is our voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Born and raised in China, Eric travelled the world as an international tour guide and visited more than 40 countries including Serbia, Vietnam, Korea, the Philippines, Egypt and Russia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cAfter traveling extensively, I thought I had seen all the world has to offer, but being a prison officer is the job I never knew I wanted,\u201d Eric said. \u201cI started a family and needed more stable work and it seemed like a good opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Eric was pleasantly surprised to find similarities between being a tour guide and his role as a prison officer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe thing I loved most about my job as a tour guide was caring for and working with people from all walks of life. Being a prison officer offers the same opportunity \u2013 it\u2019s just a different group of people.\u201d<\/div>\n
