{"id":31571,"date":"2024-10-04T00:05:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T14:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/?p=31571"},"modified":"2024-10-04T01:03:08","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T15:03:08","slug":"putting-it-to-the-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/sport\/putting-it-to-the-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Putting it to the competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ELEVEN-year-old athlete Alexis Farrell is making the small St Mary&#8217;s Primary School community in Clarkes Hill proud.<\/p>\n<p>The young Pootilla-based shot-putter and discus thrower will represent Victoria at the School Sport Australia Track and Field Championships at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre in November and December.<\/p>\n<p>At the recent team trials at Lakeside Stadium, Melbourne, the grade 5 student placed first in discus with a throw of 25.09 metres in windy conditions, and placed second in shot put &#8211; her favourite event &#8211; with a throw of 10.77 metres.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s very exciting for me and for my school,&#8221; said Alexis, who trains with Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Competing at a state level is hard, but the competition is professional which pushes me.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I enjoying talking to people and making friends there; it makes the competition so much easier.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2024\/10\/shotputvictryout24_49818.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alexis Farrell in action at the Victorian team trials. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alexis&#8217; mum Nadia Farrell said her daughter being at a small rural school doesn&#8217;t mean she misses out on any opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Alexis has competed in school sports with a number of other Sovereign schools to advance to regionals,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Regionals were held at Llanberris (Ballarat) on 12 September where she competed for the Sovereign Division.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Alexis&#8217;s main dream has been to make the Vic Team where can proudly wear the blue uniform and train with the other 139 athletes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Alexis has been competing for five years, and her personal bests are 11.05 metres in the two-kilogram shotput and 25.46 metres in the 750-gram discus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She has had training in the winter with her volunteer coach Leon Whitehand, who is very involved in Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics where she competes,&#8221; Mrs Farrell said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ELEVEN-year-old athlete Alexis Farrell is making the small St Mary&#8217;s Primary School community in Clarkes Hill proud.
