{"id":31855,"date":"2024-10-19T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-18T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/?p=31855"},"modified":"2024-10-16T19:01:38","modified_gmt":"2024-10-16T08:01:38","slug":"open-trophies-on-display-in-bacchus-marsh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/sport\/open-trophies-on-display-in-bacchus-marsh\/","title":{"rendered":"Open trophies on display in Bacchus Marsh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Bacchus Marsh Lawn Tennis Club hit a winner last Sunday when the Australian Open men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s singles trophies came to town.<\/p>\n<p>The Norman Brookes Challenge Cup and the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup spent several hours at the club&#8217;s Maddingley headquarters before being taken around town for various photo opportunities as part of Tennis Australia&#8217;s AO on the Road tour.<\/p>\n<p>And according to club president Ben White, the trophies \u2013 accompanied by Australian tennis icon John Fitzgerald \u2013 were quite a hit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was fantastic,&#8221; he said. &#8220;People were so rapt and happy; all the smiles after people got to hold these cups.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was really great to see the happiness these cups brought to the club.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2024\/10\/Tennis02_65611.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"246\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deuce: Players mark the first day of competition on the grass courts in front of the Australian Open trophies. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bacchus Marsh was the first stop on the trophies&#8217; tour, which is also taking in Castlemaine, Pomonal and several other regional towns through to December.<\/p>\n<p>After the tennis club, the trophies were taken for photo opportunities at places such as a local strawberry farm, Lerderderg Gorge and the 1000 Plus Steps.<\/p>\n<p>White said the photos would be used in a Tourism Victoria advertising campaign promoting the Australian Open and the state overseas.<\/p>\n<p>The advertisements will also be played during next January&#8217;s tournament.<\/p>\n<p>White said one of the probable reasons his club was chosen as a tour stop was its inclusivity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2024\/10\/Tennis03_68798.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"245\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prestige: The club was the first stop on the AO on the Road tour, which is taking the trophies to seven regional centres. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The club hosts A Gay Day on the Green tournament each year for the LGBTIQA+ community, as well as a women&#8217;s tournament and a Movember tournament, both of which are scheduled for next month.<\/p>\n<p>And in May, the club won Tennis Victoria&#8217;s Most Outstanding Inclusion Initiative award for it&#8217;s a Gay Day on the Green event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re more than just tennis tournaments; there&#8217;s a bit of meaning behind them,&#8221; White said.<\/p>\n<p>As well as Fitzgerald, the tour stop was attended by Tennis Victoria CEO Kim Kuchel, its country central west development officer Kate-Lyn Perkin, federal Member for Hawke Sam Rae, state Member for Eureka Michaela Settle, and Moorabool Shire councillors Ally Munari and Moira Berry.<\/p>\n<p>The day began with junior &#8216;Hot Shots&#8217; activities and when the trophies arrived at about midday, many people took the opportunity to have their picture taken with them and to hold them for just a few moments.<\/p>\n<p>White said the event also coincided with the first day of play on the club&#8217;s grass courts.<\/p>\n<p>The club operates year round for social and competitive tennis, and has two teams in the Western Region Tennis Association.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Bacchus Marsh Lawn Tennis Club hit a winner last Sunday when the Australian Open men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s singles trophies came to town.
