MEMBERS of the Ballan Cricket Club are calling for young players to try their hand at the sport with the return of a regular offering.<\/p>\n

Later this month, the club’s Woolworths Cricket Blast program, aimed at juniors aged between four and seven, will begin at Ballan Recreation Reserve, offering kids two months’ worth of coaching.<\/p>\n

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to not only learn cricket but have fun with the kids they go to school with and around town,” Blast coordinator Brendon Chavasse said.<\/p>\n

“Each session we’ll do round robin games based on improving skills \u2013 the kind of entertainment kids love.”<\/p>\n

Sessions will run from 5.30pm to 6.30pm on Fridays, beginning on 15 November for four weeks before the Christmas holidays before resuming in early February for the remainder.<\/p>\n

Mr Chavasse, whose son took part in the local program last year alongside an average of 20 children, said the program is an ideal way to keep participation going for cricket at a junior level.<\/p>\n

“Cricket’s one of Australia’s national sports, so we’re big on it but getting our kids engaged at such a young age has several benefits,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The blast program teaches them skill-based training from a young age, and unless there are grassroots programs to get our kids in early, the sport can suffer.<\/p>\n

“It’s a great opportunity to get the kids out, off their screens, keep them healthy, and having fun.”<\/p>\n
