Young people and those who are \u2018young at heart\u2019 are encouraged to take part in an upcoming concert by the Moorabool Light Orchestra (MLO).<\/p>\n

MLO will host a Young People\u2019s Concert next month in Bacchus Marsh, aimed to allow children to experience the magic of live orchestral music, as well as the opportunity to partake in the concert with their own home-made instrument.<\/p>\n

The event will also be narrated by ABC 774 Mornings host Jon Faine.<\/p>\n

MLO Musical Director Barry Wilkins said the idea to recruit Mr Faine to be part of the concert came after the MLO thought he would make a good choice to narrate the two major pieces.<\/p>\n

\u201c[We made contact] via email with an invitation, to which he readily and promptly accepted,\u201d said Mr Wilkins.<\/p>\n

Mr Faine told the Moorabool News that he \u201cgrew up with \u2018Peter and the Wolf\u2019 and \u2018Carnival of the Animals\u2019 and is \u201csuper excited to be on the other end for this performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am always excited by grassroots community events \u2013 they are the glue that keeps communities working,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

As well as classical pieces \u2018Peter and the Wolf\u2019, \u2018Carnival of the Animals\u2019 and Tchaikovsky\u2019s \u20181812\u2019 overture, the MLO are set to perform a range of music, from the \u2018Bugs Bunny\u2019 theme, the soundtrack from the 2007 film \u2018Pirates of the Caribbean: At World\u2019s End\u2019 and more.<\/p>\n

Mr Wilkins said the MLO \u201calways try to cater for a wide range of ages, as music is a universal language, but it is not always easy to engage younger members of the audience in classical music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Young people are also encouraged to make their own novelty instruments from materials at home to bring along to the concert.<\/p>\n

Those who bring their home-made instruments will be able to play along with the orchestra in the second half of the program.<\/p>\n

Household items that can be used to create instruments include wooden spoons, a funnel and a corrugated pipe for a French horn, and small Christmas bells.<\/p>\n

\u201cChildren are very creative\u2026a lot of \u2018home-made\u2019 novelty instruments seem to be in the percussion area, something they can \u2018bang\u2019, but there have been some novelty ideas emerging on other items that can \u2018blow\u2019 or \u2018scrape\u2019,\u201d said Mr Wilkins.<\/p>\n

The MLO Young People\u2019s Concert will be held on Sunday, 15 September at 2pm in the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall.<\/p>\n

Tickets are (adults) $25; children aged 16&under – free.<\/p>\n
