{"id":34541,"date":"2025-05-09T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-08T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/?p=34541"},"modified":"2025-05-08T12:35:05","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T02:35:05","slug":"expert-to-share-history-of-the-bacchus-marsh-military","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/living\/expert-to-share-history-of-the-bacchus-marsh-military\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert to share history of the Bacchus Marsh military"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MILITARY historian Neil Leckie will be at Lerderdeg Library later this month to discuss the history of the Bacchus Marsh &#8216;Army&#8217; from 1858 to 1921 and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>The BacchChat will focus on the heritage of the military in Bacchus Marsh, including key events and figures and its connections to Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Leckie will also demonstrate how to research family members&#8217; war service records.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you don&#8217;t learn from history, you will make the same mistakes,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every country needs a defence force, so if people know the history of the local part of the defence force, it can give them more of an impetus to want to join.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Leckie served in the Army and Army Reserve for 34 years, including as the executive officer of 8\/7 RVR in Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>He retired in 2011 with the rank of major and remained the manager of the Ballarat Ranger Military Museum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2025\/05\/Neil3_05184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Neil Leckie is the author of Country Victoria&#8217;s Own: 150 years of 8\/7 RVR and its predecessors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Leckie was a volunteer tour guide at Gallipoli on the Western Front from 2010 to 2018, and has written a book about 150 years of the army in Ballarat called Country Victoria&#8217;s Own: 150 years of 8\/7 RVR and its predecessors.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Leckie said he hopes the talk will boost awareness of local military history.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Army sort of bubbles along in the background and people don&#8217;t know it&#8217;s there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got Army Reserve depots in Ballarat and in many regional Victorian towns\u2026 people know about the headquarters in Ballarat, but they don&#8217;t know that all these other Army depots exist.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The event will be on Saturday 31 May from 10am until 11am.<\/p>\n<p>To register, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moorabool.vic.gov.au\/Home\">Moorabool Shire Council<\/a> website.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MILITARY historian Neil Leckie will be at Lerderdeg Library later this month to discuss the history of the Bacchus Marsh &#8216;Army&#8217; from 1858 to 1921 and beyond.
