{"id":36443,"date":"2025-10-25T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/?p=36443"},"modified":"2025-10-24T16:07:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T05:07:24","slug":"freeman-returns-to-the-cobras","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/sport\/freeman-returns-to-the-cobras\/","title":{"rendered":"Freeman returns to the Cobras"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BACCHUS Marsh&#8217;s already potent forward stocks have been given a boost ahead of 2026 BFNL season with the exciting addition of Joel Freeman.<\/p>\n<p>A former two-year player with NAB League (now Coates Talent League) club Western Jets, Freeman returns to Maddingley Park following stints at rival club North Ballarat and Western league club Newport.<\/p>\n<p>His presence up forward is sure to pose match-up worries for the Cobras&#8217; rivals next season.<\/p>\n<p>The return of Freeman, who last played in black, red and yellow in 2023, was announced on the club&#8217;s social media platforms earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are excited to announce the return home of Joel Freeman for season 2026,&#8221; the club said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After a stint away from the club, playing with North Ballarat and Newport, Joel has made the journey back to Maddingley Park.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Joel&#8217;s size and aerial strength make him a difficult match-up for any defence and he will be a be a great addition to our forward line.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Joel has already played 46 games of senior footy, as well as two seasons with the Western Jets in the Coates Talent League.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re looking forward to seeing Joel back in the colours of the mighty Cobras.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bacchus Marsh has also moved to bolster its midfield, signing former hard-running Ovens and Murray league under-18 representative Hugh Canning.<\/p>\n<p>Considered an elite endurance athlete and prolific accumulator of the football, Canning joins the Cobras after one season with Corowa-Rutherglen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Prior to this year, Hugh was a decorated junior for the Wangaratta Magpies, claiming their under-18 best and fairest award in 2024,&#8221; the club said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hugh also has representative experience at interleague level, vice-captaining O&amp;M&#8217;s under-18 team as well as playing Premier Northern Territory Football League for Waratah.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We welcome Hugh and the Canning family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The signings mark a positive start to the off-season for the Cobras, who stamped themselves as the BFNL&#8217;s most improved side in coach Dennis Armfield&#8217;s second season at the helm in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>They rose from 10th with a 4-12 record in 2024, to fifth place (8-10) this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Cobras reached the finals for the first time since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Armfield will again lead the Cobras, after signing a one-year extension back in May.<\/p>\n<p>He first joined Bacchus Marsh ahead of the 2024 season, following a 145-game career with Carlton from 2008-17.<\/p>\n<p>He previously coached Park Orchards in the Eastern Football League and was also an assistant coach for North Melbourne in the AFLW in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>More new and returning player signings are expected in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Wrapping up the season, ruckman Luke Goetz claimed the Jack Jeffrey Medal as the Cobras&#8217; senior best and fairest.<\/p>\n<p>Goetz only enhanced his reputation as one of the competition&#8217;s leading rucks with another standout season.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2025\/10\/566539128_1816150086_44694.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1018\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hugh Canning has joined the Cobras from Ovens and Murray league club Corowa Rutherglen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Young gun Josh Huxtable, who booted 25 goals for the season alternating between the midfield and defence, and was arguably the Cobras&#8217; best in their lone final against Melton, was the runner-up.<\/p>\n<p>Cody Salmon, who played 15 games and kicked nine goals before succumbing to injury, claimed the rookie of the year honour.<\/p>\n<p>In other club news, A-grade netball coach Nichole Gleeson has re-signed for a second season.<\/p>\n<p>Gleeson, who made the switch from rival club Melton ahead of the 2025 season, led the Cobras to their first finals appearance since 2019, culminating in an elimination final loss to North Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>Winless at A-grade level for several seasons prior to her arrival, the Cobras won 10 games and finished the minor round season in fifth place.<\/p>\n<p>The A-grade best and fairest was won by midcourter and sometimes defender Ally Keating.<\/p>\n<p>Keating was among a bunch of players to make the move from Melton to Bacchus Marsh along with Gleeson.<\/p>\n<p>Others included her sister and the Cobras&#8217;
