{"id":37640,"date":"2026-01-31T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/?p=37640"},"modified":"2026-01-30T15:29:05","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T04:29:05","slug":"swim-teacher-dives-into-retirement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/swim-teacher-dives-into-retirement\/","title":{"rendered":"Swim teacher dives into retirement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER 35 years, Bacchus Marsh swim teacher Elizabeth Peelman has called time on a career that has helped generations of local children learn to be safe in the water.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Peelman announced her retirement on social media this month, marking the end of decades spent teaching children not just how to swim, but how to dive in with enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe every kid should have the opportunity to swim and learn how to swim, particularly in Australia in this environment, with so much water around,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2026\/01\/Lizpoolhori_45104.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fulfilled: Elizabeth Peelman began her learn to swim program in 1989. Photo: CHRISTOPHER O\u2019LEARY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just want to thank the people who supported me,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Peelman said the decision to retire had been a &#8220;very difficult&#8221; one, made after recognising the physical toll decades in the pool had taken.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t want people to think that I have health issues, but my body just needs a rest,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>After a 14-year career in local government aquatic departments, Miss Peelman started Bacchus Marsh Learn to Swim in 1989.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2026\/01\/Lizmuralhori_45144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Committed: Elizabeth Peelman has retired from teaching swimming in Bacchus Marsh after 35 years. Photo: CHRISTOPHER O&#8217;LEARY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said her pool had taught multiple generations within the same families.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve had their kids, and now I&#8217;ve got their kids,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Most of those kids walk into that pool area and go, &#8216;Hi Liz&#8217;, and not even look to see if I was there or not, because I was always there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said her pool provided a relaxed environment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think it was more personalised,&#8221; she said. &#8220;A lot of customers became friends.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER 35 years, Bacchus Marsh swim teacher Elizabeth Peelman has called time on a career that has helped generations of local children learn to be safe in the water.
