{"id":38044,"date":"2026-02-27T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/?p=38044"},"modified":"2026-02-25T22:49:33","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T11:49:33","slug":"bacchus-marshs-fire-fighters-without-borders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/bacchus-marshs-fire-fighters-without-borders\/","title":{"rendered":"Bacchus Marsh&#8217;s fire fighters without borders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EXPERT fire fighting practices and a commitment to colleagues led Bacchus Marsh&#8217;s fire brigade across two states this summer.<\/p>\n<p>The Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade had been sent to fires across Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>Damien Fitzgerald, 4th Lieutenant for the brigade, was part of a crew that assisted in property protection and back burning as part of fires around Gellibrand, where they experienced &#8220;hot, very gusty conditions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday 4 February, brigade members went across the South Australian border to assist in managing a fire along the state&#8217;s coast.<\/p>\n<p>They were sent to contain a blaze around the Deep Creek National Park off Cape Jervis in the state&#8217;s southeast.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Fitzgerald said the fire cut off access to the road to Kangaroo Island. The fire stopped supply of goods to the island for three days.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2026\/02\/260223firiescontaini_83478.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1066\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CFA members worked to contain a blaze in South Australia\u2019s southeast this month.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Brigade members performed a similar role to what was conducted near Gellibrand, supporting park crews to contain the fire.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The terrain and the landscape over there didn&#8217;t really help,&#8221; Mr Fitzgerald said. &#8220;A lot of it was deep set of gullies and pine plantations and coastal scrub.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once a fire rips through that landscape, it can move pretty fast and hard.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Fitzgerald said that landscape where the fire was active was inaccessible, so they completed back burns to contain the fire.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;ll pick roads,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They&#8217;ll create what they call dozer lines, and they&#8217;ll back burn from those lines just to contain the fire. That was the most safest, the most efficient way to deal with that fire over there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said a great deal of thought went into fire containment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2026\/02\/260223firiesonthemov_83540.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A truck from Bacchus Marsh leads a group of crews.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot more than just putting the wet stuff on the hot stuff,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Fitzgerald began volunteering after a promise he made to his auntie, who lost her house during Sydney&#8217;s 1994 bushfires.<\/p>\n<p>He said CFA members volunteered to support the community and fellow fire fighters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s basically what we&#8217;re here for,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We just do it to help the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The brigade has 65 members.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of my members were born and bred in Bacchus Marsh,&#8221; Mr Fitzgerald said.<\/p>\n<p>A logistics manager for Aldi, he said volunteers&#8217; efforts would not be possible without employer support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most of the members are nine to five workers and they will do the overnight, early morning calls,&#8221; Mr Fitzgerald said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the brigade was recruiting daytime responders.<\/p>\n<p>Interest in volunteering can be made at <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/bacchusmarshcfa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">facebook.com\/bacchusmarshcfa<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EXPERT fire fighting practices and a commitment to colleagues led Bacchus Marsh&#8217;s fire brigade across two states this summer.
