{"id":38139,"date":"2026-03-03T18:15:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-03T07:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/?p=38139"},"modified":"2026-03-03T18:39:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-03T07:39:07","slug":"hockey-star-reflects-on-hockeyroos-debut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/hockey-star-reflects-on-hockeyroos-debut\/","title":{"rendered":"Hockey star reflects on Hockeyroos debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DARLEY sports star Zali Ward is settling back into normalcy after a whirlwind introduction to senior international hockey at the FIH Pro League in Hobart.<\/p>\n<p>Ward, 22, played her third game for the Hockeyroos and her second against China on Wednesday 25 February.<\/p>\n<p>While the Hockeyroos were beaten 3-1, a post-match fan survey by Hockey Australia had Ward ranked as close to the team\u2019s best player.<\/p>\n<p>That followed a No. 1 ranking after her debut match, also against China, on 22 February, which she started as a substitute.<\/p>\n<p>She was also part of the lineup for a confrontation with Spain the day after, again as a sub, and formed part of the on-pitch starting side for the final contest against China.<\/p>\n<p>Ward has officially become Hockeyroo No. 543, being presented with a kangaroo badge after her debut appearance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess getting the initial call-up to come into the FIH Pro League in Hobart, I was just super stoked,\u201d Ward said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen actually getting to debut for the Hockeyroos&#8230;was an incredible opportunity to live out.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 887px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2026\/03\/31621076406161_93071.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"887\" height=\"591\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zali Ward (third from left, back row) with her Hockeyroos teammates and officials during the Hobart matches.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that\u2019s been a childhood dream of mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think definitely at the start I was pretty shocked, but knowing that you\u2019ve prepared so much for an opportunity like this to hopefully happen, I was ready for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I can really think about it and reflect on the experience, but in the moment you\u2019ve got a job to do and a role to play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I went to do and I hope that I played my role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ward said she was satisfied with how she had performed at the elite level and had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.<\/p>\n<p>She said that starting out, she played purely out of a passion for the game and the relationships she developed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then as I developed as a junior, I realised that I love it more than just a hobby,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think a passion is something you want to pursue as far as you can, and I then developed the goal to play for the Hockeyroos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alongside her busy playing career, Ward is in the final year of a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Melbourne majoring in neuroscience and works part-time at Bacchus Marsh Grammar as a library assistant.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 553px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2026\/03\/31621076406164_96057.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"691\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hockeyroo Rebecca Greiner presents Zali Ward with her No. 41 guernsey at the tournament.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She also coaches junior athletes in skill development pathways, coaches privately, and works for Hockey Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>As for what\u2019s next on the pitch, Ward is preparing for the winter hockey season, which she will compete in with her Hockey One team Hockey Club Melbourne from October to November.<\/p>\n<p>The Hockey One League is Australia\u2019s premier elite hockey competition featuring seven city-based men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams playing in a home-and-away format.
