REIGNING BFNL premier Darley landed a major recruiting blow on the eve of the 2026 season, signing former VFL star Lachie George.<\/p>\n
The 38-year-old midfielder joins the Devils from rival club Redan, where he was a two-time best and fairest winner, in a move that sees him renew acquaintances with his former Williamstown VFL teammates Brett Bewley and Billy Myers.<\/p>\n
His days at Williamstown formed part of a stellar career at VFL level that included stints with North Ballarat and Box Hill, culminating in VFL life membership and club best and fairest awards.<\/p>\n
George, who played the last of his 193 VFL games for Williamstown in 2018, donned the Devils jumper for the first time on the weekend in the club’s thrilling two-point win against Sunbury last Saturday.<\/p>\n
The paperwork for his clearance was lodged just before the Easter long weekend.<\/p>\n
The Devils overcame a late 17-point final-quarter deficit to kick the last three goals of the match at Darley Park and continue their recent dominance of the Lions, who they defeated in last year’s grand final.<\/p>\n
George, who played with Redan from 2019 until last season, said he was excited to make his way to Darley.<\/p>\n
“While concentrating on my family and work over pre-season I realised the itch was still there to continue to play at a high level,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Through my friendship with ex-Willy teammates Brett and Billy I joined the program and have been more than impressed with Darley’s drive and standards for continued success under DJ (coach Dan Jordan).”<\/p>\n
Renowned for his leadership, George played a key role in helping develop Redan’s emerging young talent over the last few years.<\/p>\n
It’s an area of his football dual Devils premiership coach Dan Jordan is keen to tap into.<\/p>\n
“We’re really excited to have someone of Lachie’s calibre join our program,” he said.<\/p>\n
“His experience, hardness and versatility to play can only benefit us as a football club, both as a player and a role model for our young developing Devils.<\/p>\n
“His want to join us is a great advertisement to our program and our club.”<\/p>\n
Darley’s victory over Sunbury was led by Billy Myers, Nicholas Hind (three goals), Adam Azzopardi, Zane Le Huray, Jayven Tanner (two goals) and Mace Cousins.<\/p>\n
The Devils will face East Point this weekend, with the Kangaroos coming off consecutive losses to Bacchus Marsh and Sebastopol to start the season.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
