BACCHUS Marsh autism awareness supporter Jennifer Mclean will next month walk 7,000 steps a day as part of the national Walk for Autism campaign \u2013 for the second consecutive year.<\/p>\n

Mclean participated in the campaign, organised by Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia), for the first time last year after being diagnosed as having autism in 2024.<\/p>\n

It is now in its ninth year and brings together individuals, families, schools and workplaces to support autism inclusion.<\/p>\n

Participants are encouraged to walk 7,000 steps a day in support of the 70 per cent of people with autism who experience mental health challenges, often linked to living in environments that are not autism-friendly.<\/p>\n

This year Mclean has a strong focus on the importance of early diagnosis and access to support.<\/p>\n

“Being diagnosed helped me understand myself in a way I never had before,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It changed my life, but I often think about how different things could have been if I’d had that understanding earlier.”<\/p>\n

Mclean said that awareness is growing, but many individuals and families still face significant barriers when trying to access assessments, services and support.<\/p>\n

“I have friends and family with children who are neurodivergent, and I’ve seen first-hand how challenging it can be to navigate the system,” she said.<\/p>\n

“There can be long wait times, uncertainty, and a lack of clear pathways to get the help they need.”<\/p>\n

Mclean believes earlier diagnosis and intervention can make a profound difference.<\/p>\n

“The earlier the support the better the outcomes \u2013 not just for children but for families as a whole,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It can change a person’s confidence, wellbeing and ability to thrive.”<\/p>\n

Mclean said she would be walking with those things in mind and particularly to advocate for earlier access to diagnosis and support.<\/p>\n

“Everyone deserves the chance to understand themselves and get the support they need to live well,” she said.<\/p>\n

More than 8,000 people usually take part in the Walk for Autism and regularly raise over $1 million to support services and programs.<\/p>\n
