{"id":38966,"date":"2026-05-01T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/?p=38966"},"modified":"2026-05-01T12:33:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T02:33:10","slug":"quirky-op-shops-big-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/quirky-op-shops-big-move\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Quirky&#8217; op shop&#8217;s big move"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FIFTEEN years of memories have been packed up from a Ballan op shop&#8217;s colourful location ahead of its reopening at the Ballan Neighbourhood House early this month.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers at Steptoes Op Shop are saying goodbye to their mosaic walls, dense gardens and eye-catching artwork that had drawn bargain hunters from far and wide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People come from all over, regularly just to come to the op shop,&#8221; said Dorothy Shaw, an original volunteer who had one of her friendship plates set in the walls designed by local artist Lou Callow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2026\/05\/260423-vollieschair_41018.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers with part of the mosaic at the old op shop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a very interesting place, it made a great op shop because it was so quirky.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the past 20 years, the op shop had changed hands from a local couple, who had run it for the town&#8217;s hospital, to the Lionesses, who operated it from the Springfields Garage building and then its Inglis Street site until 2021, when Ballan Neighbourhood House (BNH) staff took over.<\/p>\n<p>Shaw said some of those who still volunteered, such as Eileen Graham and Heather Bainbridge, were a mixture of former Lionesses and others who had been there from the start.<\/p>\n<p>BNH manager Mary Francis said there had been strong community sentiment attached to the op shop.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38988\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-38988\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2026\/05\/260423-volliesbluero_40988-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"776\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers inside the former op shop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said volunteers had created a safe and welcoming place for sales and community connection.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is kindness and local knowledge available to everyone who enters their doors and we look forward to being able to continue that value-aligning legacy at BNH,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said the shop was relocating to BNH because there was a vacancy following the library&#8217;s departure, and the sale of the Inglis Street site meant it was an opportune time for change.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the new space, walls have been painted and fresh flooring laid.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2026\/05\/260423-volliesstairs_40963.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers Celia Meekings, Eileen Graham, Carolyn Brown, Eileen Hodge, Hanh Nguyen, Ian Irwin, Ross Bullock, op shop coordinator George, Dorothy Shaw and Maureen Duggan outside the old shop.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Op shop coordinator George thanked everyone who had helped with the move.<\/p>\n<p>The op shop will open on Thursdays 9.30am to 1pm, Fridays 9.30am to 2.30pm, and Saturdays 9am to 1pm.
