Soul Food Bacchus Marsh<\/a> has been named among this year’s Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) recipients in the King’s Birthday Honours.<\/p>\nAwarded for service to the community, the Exford mother of five and grandmother of 14 was one of the first members of the local volunteer-run food program founded in 2009.<\/p>\n
The program provides a hot two-course meal every Wednesday at St Bernard\u2019s Parish Hall in Bacchus Marsh to anyone who needs it, emergency and outreach food relief, and sports participation sponsorship for children whose families are struggling to make ends meet.<\/p>\n
Kearney summarised her reaction to being named among the nation’s OAM recipients in three words – “surprised, humbled and honoured”.<\/p>\n
“At this point I have no idea who nominated me,” she said.<\/p>\n
The volunteer said that over the past six years, demand for Soul Food’s weekly community lunch has skyrocketed as locals grapple with rising living costs.<\/p>\n
She said, for many, the social connectivity that comes as part and parcel of the weekly lunch gathering is as important as the food itself.<\/p>\n
“We have had massive increases in our numbers… We’ve gone from 2800 meals for the year in 2020 to 10,000 meals last year,” she said.<\/p>\n
Many local businesses have come on board to support the program, with private individuals and households also contributing surplus fruit and vegetables from their own home gardens.<\/p>\n
“We have a fabulous group of volunteers and we work really well as a team,” Kearney said.<\/p>\n
“We are the queens of using up whatever ingredients we can get our hands on.”<\/p>\n
But she said more support from local businesses would be welcome as Soul Food strives to keep pace with surging demand for what it’s providing.<\/p>\n
“When we did a survey among our lunch guests, 78 percent said they never bought fresh fruit because that didn’t come into their budget, and 74 percent never purchased fresh veg,” Kearney said.<\/p>\n
“That’s a huge number of families and children that are missing out on vital nutrients.”<\/p>\n
She said that in a world where many slip through the cracks, the program not only offers a hot meal but some things equally nourishing – dignity, hope connection and a sense of being cared for.<\/p>\n
“The program provides vital compassion in action within our local community. No questions, no judgement just good food made with love,” she said.<\/p>\n
“It makes you feel good that you can help these people in such dire situations. We don’t need thanks but we get it.<\/p>\n
“The people we help are so grateful and in such dire situations a lot of the time, it’s a delight to be in a position to see the need and be able to help and do something about it.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
