{"id":39435,"date":"2026-06-12T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/?p=39435"},"modified":"2026-06-10T16:24:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T06:24:30","slug":"for-everybody-fighting-the-beast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/for-everybody-fighting-the-beast\/","title":{"rendered":"For everybody fighting &#8216;the beast&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BACCHUS Marsh Football Netball Club&#8217;s annual Big Freeze in the Marsh made a huge splash at Maddingley Park &#8211; and for FightMND &#8211; last weekend during their contest with Lake Wendouree Lakers.<\/p>\n<p>Co-organised by Cobras president Ian McClure and Anne Phyland, the event following the reserves footy clash saw 12 sponsored locals slide into a pool of thickly-iced water for the Melbourne-based motor neurone disease charity aiming to find effective treatments and a cure for the disease known as &#8216;the beast&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>By Wednesday 10 June, the 2026 initiative had raised more-than $70,200.<\/p>\n<p>Phyland braved the chill this year to take the plunge in a Kath &amp; Kim-themed costume alongside her daughter, television presenter and Cobras netballer Liv Phyland.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/28\/2026\/06\/IMG_7630_07894.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Big Freeze in the Marsh co-organiser Anne Phyland went down the slide this year as Kim from Kath &amp; Kim. Photo: Edwina Williams.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is obviously a tribute to Neale [Daniher, the late founder of FightMND], but he would also want it to be a tribute to, and this is for, everybody who has fought this beast, has lost their battle, or is fighting this beast,&#8221; Anne Phyland said to the crowd before sliding.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To come out like you have today and support this is phenomenal, we&#8217;re really, really grateful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She introduced local teenagers Ingrid and Max to the crowd who led the countdown to the first slider.
