RESIDENTS have the chance next week to learn about recognising and responding to elder abuse.<\/p>\n

On Monday 15 June, which is also World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, an information session will be held at Bacchus Marsh’s Lerderderg Library from 10am to 11.30am.<\/p>\n

Moorabool Shire mayor Cr Steve Venditti-Taylor encouraged residents to attend the event, which will cover the topics of identifying and responding to elder abuse, aged care rights, and navigating the aged care system.<\/p>\n

“Elder abuse is an issue that is largely under-reported. It can take many forms, including physical, psychological, and financial abuse, as well as neglect, and often occurs where individuals are most vulnerable due to lack of visibility, support, access to services and awareness of their rights,” Cr Venditti-Taylor said.<\/p>\n

The Australian Institute of Family Studies’ National Elder Abuse Prevalence Study estimated that, in 2020, about one in six older people had experienced elder abuse in the previous year.<\/p>\n

“Older residents, carers, those who work with, provide services to, or engage with older people in our community are encouraged to attend this free session,” Cr Venditti-Taylor said.<\/p>\n

Elders Rights Australia will run the session.<\/p>\n

Operations manager Heather Story said it would focus on the Statement of Rights.<\/p>\n

These rights relate to when seeking or receiving aged care services.<\/p>\n

She said elder abuse was on the rise, and that it was vital older people, aged care staff and community members were aware of and could recognise and respond to the various types of abuse.<\/p>\n

A light morning tea will be provided. This is a free event and no registrations are required.<\/p>\n

The library is located at 215 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh.<\/p>\n
