during the week, Jordan said his players had stood up when it mattered.

“They (the Swans) are playing good footy; we thought there might have been a few areas we could target,” he said.

“But for us, it was about getting back to us and our brand, which I thought had been lacking or sporadic over the last month.

“We had a pretty good reset on that during the week.

“Both of our last two losses we’ve been challenged but have been in a position to win the game.

“It was unlike us to lose a couple of those games, so I’m glad we stood up and I’m glad they (Ballarat) challenged us.

“We obviously got the jump on them before the rain came, but when the rain came it turned into a bit more of that contested game and their contested game was good.

“It’s a marked improvement of them as a side.”

Without an effective target up forward against the Roosters, Billy Myers stepped up to kick seven goals in a match-winning effort.

“He gave us a real contest up there and was able to hit the scoreboard,” Jordan said.

“It’s a luxury having someone like that who can play both ends.

“Structurally, he straightened us up quite a bit as we had no target last week.”

While Brett Bewley was his usual busy self and Lachlan George, Adam Azzopardi and Zane Le Huray featured prominently, Jordan reserved praise for defender Matthew Brett for his role on dangerous Swans forward Biggie Nyuon.

“Biggie got two goals out the back, but Matty was really strong in his contested work,” he said.

“And some of our lesser lights, who we haven’t been getting as much as we need out of, were better today (last Saturday).

“It was about getting our pressure back with the ball.”

The Devils were switched on from the outset, starting confidently with a five-goal-to-one opening term, ultimately giving them a solid foundation for when things tightened later in the contest.

Reflecting on their season to date, Jordan agreed it had been mixed, but still with plenty of upside.

The Devils will head into the second round of games in fourth spot at 6-3, a win behind North Ballarat (second) and Ballarat (third) and two in arrears of pacesetter Sebastopol (8-1).

“The pleasing thing about the games we have dropped is we have been right there to win them, we just haven’t quite got there,” Jordan said.

“Hopefully we can get a few of our soldiers back and get some consistency and connection and build into the second half of the year.

“We’ve got a big challenge this week with Sunbury at home.

“It’s always a spirited game, but played in good respect.

“They’re a 20 per cent better side over there (at Sunbury), so we’ll get to work and make sure we bring the best version of ourselves.”

Ballarat lost for just the second time this season and will look to regroup ahead of a showdown for second spot against North Ballarat.

Brett Bewley’s leadership was invaluable as the Swans surged in the second half last Saturday. I thought Blake Walker was absolutely fantastic in his first real game of senior footy.

“It was great to see him grasp the opportunity.

“I’d love to have an easy win at some point this year, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

“We are going to have to keep battling our way through, but it was a great result to have a win like we did.”

The Lions’ fourth win has them in sixth spot on the ladder at the halfway point of the home and away season, a game clear of Melton and East Point, which rode a three-game winning streak into Saturday’s clash.

White believed his side had slowly worked itself into a good position.

“We obviously had a lot of injuries this year, but the way we are playing, it’s starting to turn,” he said.

“Hopefully we will continue that on for the rest of the year.”

Deng Lual, Cooper Glenwright-McGuane, Joe Dodd, Jesse Cairns and Jacob Brown (four goals) were all prominent for East Point, which faces top side Sebastopol at Eastern Oval this Saturday.

The Burra moved to 8-1 with a 40-point win over Bacchus Marsh, led by experienced hands Lachlan Cassidy, Luke Kiel and playing coach Tony Lockyer and gun recruits Joel Edwards and Felix Henderson.

Ruckman Luke Goetz, Rye Penny, Cody Gates, Tarkyn Findlay, Sam Griffiths and captain Jack Parente led the way for the Cobras, who are fifth on the ladder at 5-4.

At C.E. Brown Reserve, Jye Lockett booted four goals in North Ballarat’s 50-point win over Lake Wendouree.

Josh Morris (two goals) was dominant for the Roosters, alongside Dom Penny, Samuel Artz, Elliott Lamb and Taj Bowman.

Alfred Jarnestrom, Logan Clark (two goals), Corey Rich and Kyle Anderson toiled hard for the Lakers.

At City Oval, Rory Gunsser, Nicholas Barker, Jacob Werts and Daniel Bond shone in Redan’s one-point win over Melton.

It was the Lions’ second win of the season.

DARLEY coach Dan Jordan has lauded a return to his side’s brand of football in a five-point victory over an in-form Ballarat last Saturday.
