{"id":645,"date":"2017-05-16T05:14:02","date_gmt":"2017-05-16T05:14:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=645"},"modified":"2024-02-02T15:17:27","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T04:17:27","slug":"walking-around-the-nation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/walking-around-the-nation\/","title":{"rendered":"Walking around the nation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>By Jessica Howard<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A group of Bacchus Marsh Primary School students have walked over 1,200-kilometres since the beginning of term one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">The grade four class spend the first ten minutes of each morning walking, or running, laps of the soccer oval.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Teacher, Damian Richards said students tally their laps at the end of each day and calculate how far they have walked as a class.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">At the time of writing, students had covered 1,258.4-kilometres &#8211; the equivalent of Bacchus Marsh to Surfers Paradise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;We started the project as a way to get the children out of the classroom and to start the day with a bit of physical activity,&#8221; Mr Richards said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;As they calculate their laps, they also learn about geography as they work out whereabouts in Australia their steps have taken them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;We have a map of Australia pinned on the classroom board and the students have drawn a line showing the total distance they\u2019ve covered so far&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Students Tilly and Dean, who run around the oval each morning, said they have each tallied over 400-laps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Dean said each lap was 260-metres.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;I do about ten laps a day. I like it because it gets me to do more exercise,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;I feel better every morning, except if I accidentally do too many. Once I did 18 laps&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Mr Richards said despite the obvious physical benefits, the activity was also a great way for students to spend time with each other outside of the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;I try to walk with a different student every day.
