{"id":692,"date":"2017-05-30T03:38:01","date_gmt":"2017-05-30T03:38:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/?p=692"},"modified":"2024-02-02T16:29:28","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T05:29:28","slug":"beat-ramps-up-for-apes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/themooraboolnews\/news\/beat-ramps-up-for-apes\/","title":{"rendered":"Beat ramps up for APES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>By Jessica Howard<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After four-years in the making, indie-rock quartet APES have dropped their highly anticipated debut album.<\/p>\n<p>The band, previously hailing from Bacchus Marsh and Ballarat, have released 11 sharp and diverse tracks that make up their first release, <em>Stranger than Strangers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The record has already received a number of commendable reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone Australia, Beat Magazine and SYN FM.<\/p>\n<p>Frontman, Ben Dowd said the release was a \u201chuge relief\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a long time coming and it just feels great to get something out there and have some sort of new identity for APES,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re doing something for so long, you kind of lose sight of what you\u2019re doing. It\u2019s easy to get a bit insecure about it, so to have finally released something in full is just a really great feeling\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Produced by Ballarat\u2019s Michael Belsar, <em>Stranger than Strangers <\/em>demonstrates the experimentation, ambition and g<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-726\" src=\"https:\/\/themooraboolnews.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/download-300x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"294\" height=\"294\" \/>rowth that APES have evidenced since its 2013 EP, <em>Helluva.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was 21-years-old when I started writing the record and 25 when I finished,\u201d Dowd said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is such a hectic time of your life, so you change as a person and the stuff you write about changes, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s definitely a difference in the dynamics and texture of our sound but I think there\u2019s still an underlying thing that ties it together and makes it sound coherent. Our producer, Michael, had a big influence on the transition of our sound. He encouraged us to explore different sides of our song writing and not be afraid to experiment with different kinds of things\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>Stranger than Strangers<\/em> was mastered by Grammy Award winning engineer, Brian Lucey and mixed by Mark Rankin, Jackson Barclay and Malcolm Besly.<\/p>\n<p>Dowd said having different people to produce and mix the record enabled the final product to be consistent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had producers who had done albums for the White Stripes and the Black Keys, but then also had Mark Rankin who did Adele\u2019s 21 record\u2026 it created a different atmosphere and allowed us to experiment with different parts of the album\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>Stranger than Strangers <\/em>received a four-star review from the highly esteemed pop culture site, Rolling Stone Australia \u2013 something Dowd said was \u201castonishing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have people talking about the album the way they are is just mind blowing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve received some feedback saying that it was worth the four-year wait, which is really endearing for us, as some people can get a bit antsy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>APES are currently touring with Australian indie pop band, San Cisco, and are set to launch the new album at Yah Yah\u2019s in Collingwood on Friday, June 9.<\/p>\n<p>As for a home-town show, Dowd said it could definitely be on the cards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerforming at Flanagan\u2019s Border Inn [Bacchus Marsh] in 2013 will probably always be up there as one of our favourite shows, ever.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlaces like Flanagan\u2019s and Baby Black Caf\u00e9 do a really good job of showcasing that sort of thing, but it\u2019s unfortunate there aren\u2019t more live music venues in the town.
