The Morrison Government has announced a three-year funding package of $4.2 billion for the ABC and SBS, with across regional Victoria set to benefit.
\nMinister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said the funding will allow ABC and SBS to continue to provide innovative, comprehensive and high quality television, radio and digital media services to every Australian community.
\n\u201cThe ABC and SBS are essential components of the Australian media landscape, delivering reliable services to cities and regions alike, and this funding will lay the foundations for a competitive and sustainable future for media within our country,\u201d Minister Fletcher said.
\n\u201cWe understand the importance of delivering diverse and high quality media services to Australians no matter where they live. This is why the Government has been clear in its expectations for the national broadcasters, with a key focus on the protection and promotion of Australian content and culture.
\n\u201cThese resources will allow them to continue to deliver for every Australian no matter where they live, including through new local content and better resourced newsrooms.\u201d
\nCommitted and growing funding for the national broadcasters has been locked in over the period from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2025. The ABC will receive $3,284.9 million over the next three years. This includes $45.8 million for the Enhanced News Gathering program to strengthen local public interest journalism in regional communities.
\nThe SBS will receive $953.7 million over the next three years, including an additional $37.5 million in ongoing funding to support its long-term sustainability.
\nSenator for Victoria Sarah Henderson said the increased funding is a testament to the Government\u2019s commitment to provide an environment in which all Australians can access and benefit from media services, creative experiences and culture.
\n\u201cThis funding will enable both broadcasters to continue providing a broad variety of quality content for all Australians which will benefit by delivering quality news, entertainment and sport,\u201d Senator Henderson said.
\n\u201cOur national broadcasters provide an important service to our community, helping to inform residents about news here and overseas, to educate our children, entertain adults, and ensure our democracy remains robust and strong.
\n\u201cNo matter what ABC or SBS content you watch or what device you watch it on, this funding will support these broadcasters to continue delivering reliable local, national and international content for years to come.\u201d
\nMinister Fletcher has written to the ABC and SBS outlining their three-year funding packages, along with the Government\u2019s expectations regarding the national broadcasters\u2014 including a new National Broadcasters Reporting Framework for Australian Content.<\/p>\n
