She\u2019s played for Victoria and made the Under 21 squad, and now a Moorabool hockey star is just one step away from national selection.<\/p>\n

Darley\u2019s Zali Ward was named as one of just 23 members of the Women\u2019s National Development Squad (NDS), which, in Hockey Australia\u2019s own words, \u201cis an integral stepping stone in the pathway program, and comprises athletes identified as being on the fringe and available for Hockeyroos selection\u201d.<\/p>\n

Ms Ward was notified of her selection by email on Monday 21 March, and said she was in disbelief when she read her name in the list of players.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it. I got the email and thought, I\u2019ll open it up, I can\u2019t wait to see who\u2019s in it. But then I saw my name, it was so unexpected, I was just over the moon, I couldn\u2019t believe it,\u201d she told the Moorabool News.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s come far since her first hockey match \u2013 a fill-in game in the Under 10s where she \u201chad no idea what I was doing except running around the grass field\u201d \u2013 and admits she \u201chated hockey at first\u201d after switching from netball to hockey when she was 11.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were so many rules, it was confusing\u2026but I came to love it, the freedom, the ability to always improve on your skills. You could run anywhere, that\u2019s what I liked,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
