Teenage greyhound trainer Briana Robertson-Leech celebrated an unforgettable milestone in her young career at Sandown Park last Sunday afternoon, when preparing her first city winner.
\nRobertson-Leech, 19, was on cloud nine when Blue Tequila finished best to score over 595m, her third win from 14 starts and second from her last three.
\n\u201cI was actually pretty shocked, because it was Blue Tequila\u2019s first time at Sandown,\u201d said Briana.
\n\u201cI\u2019ve had two fourths at Sandown previously and a second and third at The Meadows, but she was my first winner in the city.
\n\u201cWhen she kept going, I thought \u2018Wow\u2019! I couldn\u2019t stop smiling for the rest of the day.
\n\u201cBut it was back down to earth on Monday at Ballarat,\u201d she said.
\n\u201cI had one second placing, but it wasn\u2019t the best day at the races.\u201d
\nBriana, who\u2019s based at Bald Hills, near Ballarat, has been encouraged in her greyhound racing endeavours by parents Donna Robertson and Gary Leech.
\nClearly not one to do things by half measures, Briana trains full-time, with a team of 11 in work, and she labels Sunday\u2019s Sandown winner Blue Tequila and lightly-raced youngster Out For Glory as the standouts.
\nBlue Tequila was originally trained by two-time Melbourne Cup winner David Geall, who\u2019s provided great encouragement to Briana.
\n\u201cI used to work at Geelong and got to know David there,\u201d Briana explained.
\n\u201cThen David asked me to train a dog of his called Ice Ghost. He had a few quirks and David thought he would benefit from a smaller kennel and some one on one attention.
\n\u201cWe won three races with him. He was originally in Mum\u2019s name as trainer because I hadn\u2019t turned 18 yet.
\n\u201cDavid also gave me another dog to train called Mystic Muse and she was my first ever winner. When she won at Bendigo it was one of the best feelings in the world.\u201d
\nBriana\u2019s success has come as no surprise to David Geall, who praised her for her passion and \u201cunbelievable commitment\u201d.
\n\u201cI could just tell Briana loved the dogs,\u201d said Geall.
\n\u201cWe ended up giving Briana a couple of our dogs to train and she started winning with them. It\u2019s great to see because we really do need young ones in the game.\u201d<\/p>\n
