The pitter-patter of little hoofs will return to Victorian tracks in coming weeks as Pony Trots Victoria readies for a big return.<\/p>\n

Training days will be\u00a0at Tabcorp Park Melton on April 23 and Shepparton on April 24, both from 1.30pm, with race days to follow on May 7 and May 8 respectively.<\/p>\n

The Melton race day will coincide with the staging of the Australian Pacing Gold four-year-old consolation finals, while the Sunday at Shepparton is part of the Pacing For Pink meeting on Mother’s Day, which is a leading fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation.<\/p>\n

Jenni Lewis, Workforce Development Manager at Harness Racing Victoria, said it would be terrific to have the pony trots back on track,\u00a0with the sport a much valued and fun gateway for those aged six to 16 to get into harness racing.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately due to difficulties with covid we have missed having the pony trots at our race days, but it\u2019s great to see them returning,\u201d Lewis said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe training days will be a chance for the kids to practice on the race track with other ponies around them, and for the new ponies and drivers to be able to qualify for racing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lewis said the training\u00a0sessions\u00a0enabled both the young drivers and their ponies a chance to see how they performed on track.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the training days they also get tuition from drivers and information about caring for their ponies, as well as meet with other participants.<\/p>\n

“It’s also an opportunity for children who\u00a0may not have a pony or any gear but\u00a0would like to get involved to come along on the day and learn more about Pony Trots Victoria.”<\/p>\n

Further training and race days are expected to be announced in coming weeks.<\/p>\n

More broadly, Pony Trots Victoria is building towards a relaunch from September, which will include embracing country cups and the Melbourne Inter Dominion in 2022 and, in 2023, see the establishment of new championships carrying great prizes and experiences.<\/p>\n
