From Facebook page ‘A few mates from Bacchus Marsh’<\/p>\n

Another local landmark lost to progress was the Lifeguard Milk Factory. It was located in Main Street, on the site of the Village shopping centre and was in its heyday in the 1940s and 50s. <\/p>\n

It was a time when dairy farming was a major part of the local economy and the factory produced powdered and condensed milk products as well as baby formula made from local milk. The factory employed hundreds of men and some women and even had its own local football team playing against Bacchus Marsh, Maddingley and Darley etc. <\/p>\n

To give you some idea of scale, the factory and out buildings complex covered the entire area that is now the Village Shopping Centre. It had a chimney over 100ft high which could be seen from almost anywhere in the valley. <\/p>\n

The factory closed in the late 60s and the site was eventually bought for commercial redevelopment. After the demise of the factory the local dairy industry also went into decline. But there was a time when we were as well known for quality dairy produce as much as fruit and vegetables.<\/p>\n
