A proposed name change for a street in Ballan has been put on hold, with an ongoing State Government review standing as an obstacle.<\/p>\n

A recommendation came before the 6 April Ordinary Meeting of Council (OMC), to approve renaming of the section of Duncan Street, Ballan off Simpson Street to \u2018Shamrock Court\u2019.<\/p>\n

The landowner at 26 Duncan Street suggested the \u2018Shamrock Court\u2019 name, as the non-contiguous nature of the street \u201ccauses her property to be difficult to locate due to vehicles not being able to access this section of road via Inglis Street\u201d, according to the recommendation.<\/p>\n

Concerns around mail delivery and emergency services delays were raised by the landowner.<\/p>\n

However, an objector at the 6 April OMC, Helen Tatchell, suggested the street instead be named \u2018Simpson Court\u2019.<\/p>\n

Citing historical records, Ms Tatchell argued that Simpson Court would be a more appropriate name, and would help mail delivery workers and emergency services locate the court.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll just explain some brief background. I read from the Ballan Shire Historical Society\u2019s \u2018The Settler\u2019, which is their newsletter, from June 2003, Volume 7 Number 2. In June 2002, Moorabool Shire Council attracted funding under the State Government\u2019s \u2018Pride and Place Program\u2019\u2026in that, they wanted to develop street signage,\u201d Ms Tatchell said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn that study, they found that there was an early map of Ballan township, dated 1856. And in that, there was a survey done of the town\u2026within that framework, the names of eight streets were identified. One included Simpson Street. Of those streets, they were named to recognise persons of significance in Ballan.<\/p>\n
