A spirited Darley were no match for a more seasoned, undefeated Melton at MacPherson’s Park. The game from the outside, reeked of a five goal Bloods win – either side of that was always going to tell us more about the Devils progress off a winless 2021.<\/p>\n

The match itself, in trying conditions was a hard watch for the footy purest – conditions were blustery, pocket to pocket but made look still on occasions by the Bloods, whose ball movement from defence, forward into the breeze (especially) was a defining feature. The Bloods run and carry between the arcs was noted by both coaches post-match with Devils coach Dan Jordan conceding, “that’s how we want to play.” In fairness to the Devils, the Bloods (2018 Grand Finalists) have been at it for four years, honing their craft, their style and are one of the most respected teams in the comp. Jack Walker, Kyle Borg and Jacob Hickey had a heap of the footy and were instrumental driving the Bloods repeatedly into attack. Their accountability with and without the ball is as good as any in the comp. Bloods forward Ryan Carter (2 goals) and Liam Carter (1 goal) looked like they were going to tear the game apart but credit to the young Devils defence, their influence was tempered.<\/p>\n

Mace Cousins was arguably Darley’s best player up until half time and often two links in the chain out of defence. The former Western Jet has found a home at the level across half back and has a massive role to play at the club in the interim before a likely move (in time) beckons into a midfield rotation.<\/p>\n

Zane LeHuray played his best game in Devils colors and really stood up following the loss of key defender Matthew Brett (knee) in the opening few minutes. Trent Angwin helped temper the aerial presence of Ryan Carter, while Duncan Cadman and Mitch Ward did some good things to negate the scoring when repeatedly under the pump.<\/p>\n

Brett Bewley was clearly the Devils leading possession winner on the ground, his presence alone is undeniable, his contribution vital. The support crew led by Luther Baker was sound but whether the Devils won the midfield battle is a different conversation altogether. On effort alone they’re to be commended as the growth and footy smarts of those around them continue under the charge of experienced mentor and coach Dan Jordan.<\/p>\n

Darley are at home this week against old rivals Sunbury. The Lions are 0-3, expect them to go all in at selection this week with some big names to get their season back on track. Despite the Devils current 5th placing on the BFNL ladder, the visitors are expected to start favorites.<\/p>\n
