In tribute to his father, a Moorabool man is getting on his motorbike to raise money for Alzheimer\u2019s research, taking part in a two-day race through desert country in the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n

Peter Bedford from Bacchus Marsh will participate in the Finke Desert Race over the Queen\u2019s Birthday long weekend, inspired by his dad Chris, who died from early-onset Alzheimer\u2019s aged 67.<\/p>\n

Chris Bedford was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer\u2019s disease at just 59 years of age, and for seven years he battled the disease, before passing away last year.<\/p>\n

The Finke Desert Race leaves from Alice Springs to the remote community of Aputula (formerly Finke) on Day 1, then heads back from Aputula to Alice Springs on Day 2 \u2013 a journey of around 230 km each way.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s known as the toughest off-road race in Australia, and is often compared to the Dakar Rally \u2013 but Mr Bedford is keen to twist the throttle come June 12.<\/p>\n

\u201cUp on my wife\u2019s farm I\u2019m always on the motorbike\u2026and the race is always something I\u2019ve wanted to do, bit of a life challenge so to speak. When Dad passed, I thought, he didn\u2019t get a chance to do everything he wanted to do. Life\u2019s too short, I thought, I\u2019m just going to do it,\u201d he told the Moorabool News.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d be lying if I said I wasn\u2019t a little bit nervous about the race…I\u2019ve been out on the bike every week practicing since about November.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Bedford said his father\u2019s diagnosis was one of many examples proving that Alzheimer\u2019s doesn\u2019t just affect the elderly \u2013 a fact he is keen to raise awareness of.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess I think more about my kids\u2026if I can do something to help prevent something happening to them, that would be good. But also, to try and make people aware of it too\u2026it\u2019s not just an old people\u2019s thing, it can happen to anyone,\u201d Mr Bedford said.<\/p>\n
