Bangalow’s history comes to life

A film showcasing the history of Bangalow will screen at Bangalow Heritage House and Museum on Friday November 22.

The 75-minute film, From Out of the Vault, consists of archival footage taken by Bangalow Historical Society member Terry Bleakley from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s.

It features a performance by acclaimed pianist David Helfgott, on whom the Oscar-winning film Shine was based, at The Buttery rehabilitation centre as well as TV news stories about Bangalow, residents talking about the Bangalow Show and the old pool in Piccabeen Park, and school events.

“It seeks to show that, despite enormous change in the demographic, the institutions and the appearance of the town, people still went about their daily lives having fun and creating community — remaking the town in their own image as did everyone who preceded them,” Bleakley said.

Bleakley said while many old-time locals have booked tickets, he hoped people who have moved to the area in more recent times would come along.

“Any record of a town’s history helps us learn,” he said. “Bangalow is still changing rapidly, and it is useful to remember that this has always been the case.

“What the film tells us is that life goes on. Remembering and respecting what came before helps us place change in context and negates simple reactive criticisms on social media whenever something changes in town.”

From Out of The Vault will screen on the verandah at Bangalow Heritage House & Museum on Friday, November 22 at 6.30pm, with doors open from 5pm.

Tickets cost $10 per person, with money raised from the night going towards funding future exhibitions at the museum.

“Hopefully the evening’s weather will co-operate and will suit a picnic in the grounds before the film,” Bleakley said.
