THE Tweed saw a celebration of classical music last weekend with several concerts in the region, including the Caldera Chamber Ensemble’s Magnificent Mozart recital.

With an extended 20-piece orchestra, the hall was packed to capacity in the bucolic scenery of Stoker’s Siding.

“It surpassed all expectations, and audience numbers were higher than expected,” conductor Barry Singh said.

“People came from as far south as Lismore and as far north as Brisbane.

“The audience response was amazing, with a full standing ovation at the end.

“As a bonus, there wasn’t a crumb left from the cake sale, so we not only delighted the ear but also the palate.”

A boosted stage also welcomed feature soloists Neil O’Donnell on the French horn in the Horn Concerto no.4 in E Flat and Carmelia McWilliam on Flute in the Andante in C major for Flute.

The rousing response from the 200+ music lovers to the final notes only reinvigorated Singh’s belief that music and the arts are essential for the human psyche.

“Promoting the arts and, in my case, music, is one of the ways we can nurture the soul and uplift the human spirit, particularly in the troubled times in which we live,” he said.

“What could be better than a drive through the gorgeous verdant countryside on a glorious day and immerse yourself in the music of Mozart?”

Singh is a force in the classical world, founding the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra almost 30 years ago, a violin and cello teacher of repute, and focused on the future of the Caldera Chamber Ensemble.

“Classical music has not died in our area – in fact, more groups are performing now than when I started,” he said.

“However, we still need to help the younger generation value the beauty of classical music.

“So much reliance on electronic devices can be a hindrance to appreciating live music.

“We hope the September weather is stable as we are planning another open-air concert and picnic with a popular music program.

“We will continue to build the ensemble, develop a wide-ranging repertoire and build on the high standard of playing.”
