THE Byron Bay Surf Festival will showcase “Surviving to Thriving,” an acclaimed film about local surfer Karin Ochsner’s journey of healing.

Scheduled for August 16 at Byron Theatre, the event will highlight Ochsner’s resilience in the face of severe challenges, including a terrifying encounter with a shark.

Her story goes beyond thrill-seeking, showcasing her battle with a rare immune system illness and significant challenges.

Since childhood, Ochsner has dealt with severe allergies affecting her lungs, stomach, intestines, skin, and brain.

Her condition is believed to be linked to her father’s use of immunosuppressive drugs before her conception.

Despite these severe challenges, Ochsner finds relief in the ocean, where the saltwater alleviates her symptoms and surfing provides pain relief through adrenaline.

Ochsner confronts her deepest fears and past traumas head-on.

The film’s stunning footage reveals the healing power of nature and a supportive community, enriched by interviews with local legends such as Delta Kay, Pauline Menczer, Kieren Perrow, and Joel Fitzgerald.

Professional surfers Layne Beachley and Joel Paxton also contribute, painting a comprehensive picture of Ochsner’s adventurous and rewarding journey.

BayFM DJ Danny Salfield will lead a panel discussion featuring shark expert Leo Guida and Mandy Hawkes, offering deeper insights into the film.

The event will start at 6:00 pm with the opening of the venue doors and bar.

Theatre doors will open at 6:40 pm, and the screening will commence at 7:00 pm.

The event is expected to conclude at 10:00 pm.

Tickets are free, but donations for the Surviving to Thriving project are welcome, aiming to inspire and motivate those facing severe challenges.

All ticket holders will be entered into a giveaway, with prizes including a Cruzr e-bike, a surfboard, and a Hydro Flask adventure pack, totalling $4,500.
