INDIE rock band Holy Holy is performing at Beach Hotel Byron Bay on February 14 before embarking on a farewell tour.

The Triple J favourite, consisting of Tim Carroll and Oscar Dawson, will use the gig to test out material and songs they haven’t played for a while ahead of their Grand Hiatus tour.

“In a way it’s an opportunity for fans to have an intimate experience and see what the rest of the country will see when we do the tour later in the year,” Carroll said.

The passionate songwriters and guitarists met while volunteering as English teachers in Thailand in their late teens and reconnected when they were both living in different parts of Europe in their 20s.

They formed the band after they both returned home to Australia and released their first EP, The Pacific, in 2013.

Their album My Own Pool of Light was nominated for best rock album at the 2019 ARIA Awards and Hello My Beautiful World was nominated in 2021.

But with Carroll returning to Sweden for two years so his kids can spend time with their mum’s family there, they have decided to disband.

“There were complications involved in running a band from the other side of the world but it’s feeling like the right time to call it now,” Carroll said.

But he said using the term hiatus for their last tour makes it easier to contemplate.

“It means no more shows for now and it’s hard to say if we’ll ever perform again,” he said.

“Maybe there’s part of us that finds it hard to say that’s the end forever and these songs will never be performed again.

“There’s this element that we wrote all these songs, and some are so special to us and our fans.

“I didn’t want to just drop off the face of the earth – we have a lot of fans who really love the band and it almost felt like I wanted to be able to give them the chance to see us one last time.”
