Grigoryan Brothers: Past, Present and Future

11 June, 7pm-9:20pm

With a repertoire spanning centuries, continents and genres, Slava and Leonard Grigoryan are regarded as Australia’s finest classical guitarists, renowned for their remarkable telepathy and ability to evoke emotion in every note. Painters, sculptors, writers and dancers often describe their art as flowing through them rather than from them, and a Grigoryan Brothers performance reflects that same idea. Their playing reveals an almost intangible connection to the soul of the music, whether performing original works or interpretations, bringing depth, sensitivity and unity to every piece. The performance will take place at Brunswick Picture House. Book tickets at Eventfinda.

WE ARE NOT POWERLESS Incl Q&A with director and star Muzafar Ali, and director Jolyon Hoff

14 June, 6pm-8pm

Ten years ago when Australia “stopped the boats”, a small $200 donation helped spark a grassroots education movement for refugees in Indonesia. Husband and wife Muzafar Ali and Nagina Zahra co-founded a two-room school with little more than notebooks and pens. Since then, it has grown into a network supporting more than 1,300 refugee students and 130 refugee teachers. Despite early scepticism from the UNHCR, the schools have flourished, with students obtaining school leaving certificates and entering universities around the world. The story is screening at Murwillumbah’s Regent Theatre. Get tickets at Humanitix.

Sarah Ujmaia – Marmoreum (28°48’34.4”S 153°16’45.6”E)

12 June – 23 August

Sarah Ujmaia’s installation Marmoreum will be on show at Lismore Regional Gallery, exploring processes of marble metamorphosis where shell material is transformed under heat, pressure and time into enduring rock. The work is informed by the cobblestone paved market squares in northern Iraq – taking a standard yet irregular paver and hand casting its facsimiles to produce a floor. The installation invites reflection on shifting value, transformation and language. For more information visit lismoregallery.org/exhibitions/marmoreum-28deg48344s-153deg16456e
