LOCAL beauty expert Mukti has relaunched her book Truth in Beauty, which lifts the lid on the dark side of the beauty industry.

Mukti, who started her career in the industry as a skin therapist, founded Mullumbimby-based Mukti Organics in 2000 after she noticed there was a gap in the market for non-toxic, natural and certified organic beauty products that were backed by science.

She has since won several awards, including the People’s Choice Award for best skincare product in the 2024 Spa & Wellness Awards held at Crystalbrook Byron.

Mukti wrote and self-published Truth in Beauty in 2018, but decided to update it after reading a New York Times article warning about personal care products containing harmful chemicals.

“As I read through the article and the corresponding comments, I realised that there is a high level of curiosity and concern and the information I had previously compiled could reach a larger audience,” she said.

“This fuelled me to complete the overhaul of Truth in Beauty.

“The largest focus was on industry changes and up to date evidence-based research relating to problematic and toxic ingredients.”

Mukti said when she was researching and developing products for her business, she wished there was a book she could turn to as a go-to guide.

“I felt there needed to be an industry standard, or a ‘bible’ we could go to when it comes to all things skin,” she said.

“I also felt there was a lot of misinformation in the industry, as well as many industry ‘secrets’ that customers deserve to know.

“The aim of the book is to help readers navigate the clean beauty movement and achieve a healthier lifestyle.

“There is a specific consumer in the Northern Rivers who are mindful about what they put on their skin.”
