TWEED Shire Council is presenting a program of events for this year’s NAIDOC Week to the theme of The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy.

Including the annual Cultural Day, the Sports Expo at Arkinstall Park, and the Saltwater Day community barbecue at Fingal Head, the week culminates in the NAIDOC March and Corroboree in the Park on Friday, July 11, followed by a dinner dance and final celebration.

Tweed Shire mayor Chris Cherry said the week was a powerful opportunity to reflect, connect and look ahead.

“We’re honoured to support NAIDOC Week in the Tweed and stand with our local First Nations communities in celebration and solidarity,” Cr Cherry said.

Tweed Regional Museum’s Museum on Wheels will travel to NAIDOC events throughout the week with its Blak Excellence display, highlighting the talented and innovative local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

A chance for Australians to celebrate nationally, the week also gives the Tweed community the opportunity to recognise the people of the Bundjalung Nation – the Ngandowal and Minyungbal speaking people, and the Goodjinburra, Tul-gi-gin and Moorung-Moobah clans.

“This year’s theme reminds us that the future of culture, community and connection lies in the hands of our young people and the legacy they carry forward,” Cr Cherry said.
