JOURNALIST and author Jess Hill will speak in Lismore on June 26 as part of an evening exploring gender-based violence and cultural change.

The Star Court Theatre event will feature conversation and performance, with Hill sharing insights from more than 15 years of work on domestic abuse and coercive control.

She has worked with ABC Radio, served as a Middle East correspondent for The Global Mail, and was an investigative journalist with Background Briefing. Her reporting has earned two Walkley awards, three Our Watch awards, and an Amnesty International award.

Hill’s 2019 book See What You Made Me Do won the Stella Prize and was later adapted into a three-part SBS documentary — the network’s highest-rating factual program. The book has been translated into five languages and remains one of the most highly rated Australian titles on Goodreads.

Her more recent work includes the podcast The Trap and the Quarterly Essay’s The Reckoning, which examined how #MeToo changed Australia.

“Political spin has no power against the rage unleashed by #MeToo,” Hill said.

“At its heart, this is an accountability movement.

“The cultural revolution of #MeToo is not just about sexual violence; it is taking aim at patriarchy’s most sacred compact: the keeping of men’s secrets.”

Mistress of Ceremonies Lissie Turner will host the evening opening with a performance by Byron Bay Singing’s Flash Bang Mob, engaging the audience in an uplifting, interactive singing experience.
