THE Northern NSW Health District has issued a warning about bluebottle stings as the stingers swarm east coast beaches this summer.

“These stingers can cause intense pain, red wavy lines, and joint aches,” the statement read.

“Teach children not to touch them, regardless of whether they are on the beach or in the water.”

Surf Life Saving Australia advises removing tentacles carefully with a towel or gloves, rinsing the sting with seawater, and immersing the affected area in hot water for 20 minutes.

If hot water isn’t available, apply cold packs or ice in a dry plastic bag.

Beachgoers should seek medical aid if symptoms persist or an allergic reaction occurs.

Lifeguards can assist with first aid, or advice can be sought from the Poisons Information Centre at 13 11 26.
