BALLINA Shire Council is calling on the community to join an initiative to reduce household food waste and improve living standards across the region.

The Great Unwaste is an initiative led by national not-for profit group End Food Waste Australia.

It focuses on proper food storage, meal planning and creative ways to use leftovers to help create a sustainable solution to waste and pollution.

The national goal is to reduce 20 per cent of household waste by 2030.

Council’s resource recovery education officer Justine Rowe said it was part of its long-term sustainability plan.

“We are thrilled to join The Great Unwaste and support our community to tackle the important issue of food waste,” said Justine Rowe, Council’s Resource Recovery Education Officer,” she said.

“This campaign offers simple, effective behaviours that every household in Ballina Shire can easily adopt to reduce waste and save money.”

The campaign kicks off on Sunday, March 16 with the six-week Unwaste Challenge.

Participants will receive an email with helpful tips to reduce food waste to trial at home.

Support will include a meal planning template, a spreadsheet to help track waste, and direct communication with Rowe at the council.

Campaign director at End Food Waste Australia Mandy Hall said council’s play an important role in fostering change.

“We’re confident Ballina’s leadership will inspire local residents to reduce food waste, without blame or shame, and make a lasting impact on their environment,” Ms Hall said.
