East Coast 8s brings fast-paced soccer competition to Lennox Head
A NEW soccer carnival, the East Coast 8s, will bring hundreds of open-age competitors to Lennox Head over the Australia Day long weekend.
Northern Rivers Football and Lennox Head Football Club are co-hosting the event on January 24–25, offering cash prizes for the winners of the open men’s and women’s competitions.
It is one of the only open-age carnivals of its kind in the region and will attract some of the best players from the Football Far North Coast competition.
The winner-takes-all format will see equal prize money of $1000 across both divisions.
There will be social and competitive eight-a-side games and plenty of activities throughout the weekend.
A penalty shootout challenge will see teams nominate a striker and goalkeeper to compete for additional cash prizes.
The weekend is designed to be social and bring an economic boost to the region, with competitors encouraged to attend pubs and restaurants in Lennox Head.
“This is more than just football — it’s the perfect excuse for a weekend away with your mates,” an event spokesperson said.
“Enjoy quality game time on the pitch, then wind down with a cold drink, great food, and beachside vibes in one of the most scenic spots on the North Coast.”
It will be fast-paced action designed to be a test of endurance, with multiple games to be played over the weekend.
There are modified rules which can see goals be scored directly from kick-off, corners and kick-ins.
After a goal is scored, play can restart as soon as the opposition get the ball back to halfway.
There will be unlimited interchange, with spectators expected to see plenty of attacking flair from the sidelines.
