Female-led production team brings Into the Woods to life
BANGALOW Theatre Company is set to debut Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods at Byron Theatre on November 22, led by an all-female production team.
This popular musical weaves classic fairy tales like Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk, delving into the complexities of life and human desires.
Amy Skene, directing for BTC for the first time, brings over 20 years of performing arts experience to the show.
“Sondheim’s work is layered and rich, and we’re embracing that to create a production that feels both familiar and surprising,” Skene said.
Returning for her sixth role with BTC, Tia Nelson is Assistant Director. She was nominated for a Gold Palm Theatre Award for her role in RENT.
Long-time BTC Musical Director Margaret Curtis, a nominee for past productions like Hair, will oversee the live band.
Producer Bobbie Field is enthusiastic about the project.
“Working on Into the Woods has been a thrilling challenge, and we are so proud of what we’ve achieved as a team,” Field said.
“This production brings together a mix of fairy tale magic and deep, emotional storytelling that I think will resonate with everyone.”
Co-producing with her is local author and performer Hollie Azzopardi.
“It’s an honour to help bring this beautiful story to life, especially with such a talented group of women leading the way,” Azzopardi said.
Choreographer Sher Manu, with 30 years of experience, promises a vibrant production. She won Best Choreographer for Hair last year.
The show explores the unexpected consequences of pursuing dreams and the lessons learned through Sondheim’s witty lyrics.
Performances will run from November 22 to 30. Tickets are available at bangalowtheatre.com.au.
