FORTY people from around the world became Australian citizens at a ceremony in Lismore this month.

The ceremony was held at the Adam Gilchrist Pavilion, where mayor Steve Krieg welcomed the new citizens on behalf of the community.

The group represented countries including Chile, Fiji, France, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, the Philippines, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Vanuatu and Vietnam.

Krieg said citizenship ceremonies were among the most rewarding responsibilities of local government.

“One of the great honours of being mayor is welcoming new Australian citizens into our community,” he said.

“Citizenship is a major milestone, and I congratulate everyone who took this step. We are proud to welcome you as part of Lismore’s story and Australia’s future.”

Lismore City Council conducts regular citizenship ceremonies on behalf of the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs.
